“If ye love me…”

John 14.15

In the verse above Jesus is saying, “If ye love me…”

The first thing I think is, “Who am I that I could love Him like He has loved me!?”  But then I realize, Jesus expects me to address what He is saying.  He is saying, “If ye love me…”.

“If ye love me” what?  “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”  The word “keep” here means, to guard (from loss or injury, by keeping the eye upon)”.

Just like this soldier is keeping a guard, keeping an eye on this memorial cross, so we as Christians should be keeping an eye on the Word of God – the Bible, the Book that tells us the commandments of God.

The Bible tells us everything we need to know to have peace in this life.  The Bible tells us everything we need to know when it comes to loving our fellow man.  The Bible that tells us how to prepare for eternity… “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”  (1 John 5:3) “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”  (John 15:13)

“Keeping” God’s Word is not easy, but is it the best way we can lay down our lives for our friends – How else will they learn of God’s love in sending His only begotten Son to die for them?  Do you know God?  Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour?
