“…mine iniquities have taken hold upon me… they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.”

Psalms 40:12

Please read that verse again slowly and think about it.

Our sinfulness should be shocking to us sometimes!  To honestly accept how wicked we are, is so important if we want to know the Lord better.

It’s true, that when I acknowledge and “own” my sin, when I admit that I can be so selfish, self-centred, among many things, “my heart faileth me”

It’s depressing and discouraging!  It would be very hard for us if this verse was all by itself here in Psalm 40…

“…mine iniquities have taken hold upon me…

they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.”

But before this verse, there’s another verse, verse 5…

“Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” Psalms 40:5

Even before mankind began to sin, God’s thoughts were about saving us through the work of Christ, it is all beyond our understanding – they are more than we can understand!

 Here is our choice:

  1. Live in denial of our sins and never receive God’s forgiveness, comfort and friendship.  Or…
  2. Admit and “own” our sins, be willing to leave them and change (repentance) and ask the Lord to forgive us, to save us completely, beyond anything we could imagine!

It is completely our choice.  “Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.”
